Capsule (2023 - 2025)

18 images, DSLR

  • A collection of moments in Chicago, captured at a time where normalcy began to disintegrate and coexistence with bigotry felt more and more difficult: between Nov. 2023 and May 2025. Near the end of Joe Biden’s presidency and after the second election of Donald J. Trump, there was a distinct silence that fell over the city. Communities began to relish their last perceived moments of freedom and catharsis together. Clocking in felt like coping as we waited for reality to shift. Then, with the new administration, it felt like even the tallest, oldest buildings could fall.

Blurry people, puzzle-like architecture that is supposed to fit together, hundreds of individual souls behind windows and traversing streets that should feel safe or familiar. This is a capsule of stillness that would later become an unfathomable privilege.

An Enigma (2022-2023)

5 images, DSLR, edited with Photoshop

  • Digital collages made entirely of childhood pictures layered with modern stills, themed around states of mind in their rawest forms. As children, every new sensation permanently alters our brain chemistry. The first hug and taste of something sweet. The first skinned knee. The first feelings of envy, gratitude, or freedom. Our capacity for complex emotion is a major pillar of human intelligence; yet we are conditioned to mask our moods instead of viewing them as sources of power and growth.

The collages, Safety, Want, Home, and Youth, are accompanied by a single still, titled Enigma (formerly Contortion). This still was taken in my childhood bedroom at a time of extreme change and test of character. As a black woman, existence without regard for outside expectations

both freed me from shame and put a target on my back; both from the outside world and those close to me. The only certainty that existed was my body and the consciousness within it: shaped by years of feeling every sensitivity in its entirety and reacting according to my most authentic self.

Voids (2021)

2 images, DSLR

  • Images captured during long commutes from one place to another. In both images, the occupation of humanity is implied, yet not physically shown. Even in packed train cars and streets below populated apartment complexes, the feeling of isolation and otherness can be felt despite being in the vicinity of many other people. Alone and surrounded all at once.

In the same vein, abandonment of the established self during time of transportation or transition is usually the only time in most days we have to think real thoughts and feel real emotion before stowing them away again. The veil thins, walls fall, and we feel alive yet inhuman at the same time.

Sculpture

On Uneven Ground (2023)

oil clay, wood, cinder blocks, bricks, acrylic paint

  • Two legs made of oil clay, never to harden as they balance on a piece of wood atop concrete cinder blocks and brick.

This piece is an ode to generational traumas and the fragile successes of the past. The triumphs of BIPOC individuals and groups are attacked constantly; which leaves us less and less to stand on. Our rights and way of life, built on the efforts of family and ancestors, have given us enough stability to climb further than we ever have. However, we only have so many concrete protections left. Even if those still exist, our normalcy is fragile and can be taken away by violence, fire, or even a light push from an ill-meaning hand.

Longing v. 1 (2023)

oil clay, bricks

  • A bust with an uncomfortable, yet uncontrollable yearning for enlightenment: made of oil clay and positioned directly under a light far above it. With warmth or a much closer light source, the clay will soften and lose its integrity. With intense heat, it will melt completely off its small pedestal.

Knowledge in all forms destroys everything previously untouched by it. Most people don't chase ignorance, although it breeds an illusion of stability and comfort. Despite its destructive nature, knowledge offers the opportunity to rebuild and reframe for the better.
